New Trend in Music
Features of content and arrangement

New Trend in Music (Book 1-3) is a series of Music textbooks for junior secondary school students based on the “Arts Education Key Learning Area – Music Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 to Secondary 3)” publish by the Curriculum Development Council of the Hong Kong Education & Manpower Bureau (now called the Education Bureau) in 2003. Through integrated learning activities, listening, performing, creating, etc., students will achieve the four learning targets on the right.

To reach these goals, the books are carefully designed and arranged in the following way:

  • Topics are arranged in modules and the learning objectives are concisely and clearly illustrated on the front page of each module.

  • Each module consists of several related units based on realistic situations. This helps to arouse students’ interest, and motivate learning.

  • Interactive integrated learning activities (teachers-students interactive, as well as students-students interactive) enrich students’ music experience and enhance their musical knowledge. Students are required to apply learnt knowledge in the learning activities. Activities with a higher level of difficulty are marked with ★ to cater learner diversity.

Comprehensive activities in the books include:
A well-balanced list of songs in different genres and origins are provided, including folk songs from different countries, a classical repertoire, art songs and popular songs. Students are asked to sing a solo, unison and parts. Chords for accompaniment are given and accompanying instruments are suggested so as to ass variety to the students’ music experience.

Selected songs, related songs and well-known excerpts of music are compiled with introductions, guidance and listening focus to foster students’ appraisal competence and critical thinking power. Students’ ability to understand music in context is further enhanced.
Music experience is analyzed and organized. Essential information and knowledge for completing the learning tasks in each unit is provided.
Creative activities related to the unit content, can be conducted individually or in groups. Guidelines, hints and authentic examples are provided for reference. Assessment criteria are suggested as guidance to students in applying learnt knowledge.
Through researching into topics related to different units, students’ high order thinking abilities, e.g. organizing skills, analyzing skills, etc. are strengthened. Self-learning is thus encouraged.
Creative tasks for consolidation of the modules have been designed to consist of activities related to the units in the modules. Suggestions, guidelines and authentic examples are given. Moreover, students are required to apply what they have learnt in completing tiered assignment to cater for learners’ diversity.
